There was a lot of spotlight on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL auction this time. They went out and broke the bank for a couple of players and seem to have added some immense depth to their squad.
However, it didn’t start like that for them. For the first three seasons, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) had all the big names but couldn’t deliver. But a change in captaincy and a change in personnel changed the way KKR played and they started to rise up. They won the IPL title twice in 2012 and 2014 and even made it to the playoffs three seasons in a row – 2016, 2017 and 2018.
However, in 2019, they went through a bad phase. They lost six games in a row which dent their playoff chances massively and they finished fifth on the points table. Hence, they did let go some of their big stars ahead of this season as the likes of Robin Uthappa and Piyush Chawla were released.
In the IPL auction for the 2020 season, KKR bought nine players and were one of the biggest spenders in this auction. They added Pat Cummins who became the second-most expensive player in the history of the IPL auction. They also bolstered their squad by snapping up Eoin Morgan, Tom Banton, Rahul Tripathi and Varun Chakravarthy for this season as KKR go on the hunt for their third IPL triumph.
KKR set to start their IPL 2020 campaign against RCB
KKR start their campaign with an away game as they travel south to Bengaluru on the 31st of March. They return home for a couple of games as they host DC and CSK in the span of three days at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The two-time IPL champions are on the road for the next four games as they have just one home fixture and that against MI on the 12th of April.
They have back to back games against KXIP as they first face them at the Eden Gardens on the 23rd of April before travelling to Mohali for the return fixture which is on the 26th of April. KKR have another away game against MI before they return home and play three out of their last four games of the league stages at home. They finish their 14 games on the 15th of May against SRH in Kolkata.
