Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, hasn’t had the privilege of taking part in the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL). Prior to this season, he lost the captaincy of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to David Warner after leading them in 2018 and 2019 respectively. And now, adding insult to injury, the veteran got injured in the training session before SRH’s first match.

During the game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Warner said that the Tauranga-born sustained a quadriceps injury. The Sunrisers missed his presence as SRH suffered a horrendous batting collapse, losing the match in Dubai by 10 runs.

“Kane Williamson is not fit, he hurt his quad (quadriceps) while training the other day and (with) Mohammad Nabi,” Warner had said.

Kane Williamson given an update

In the meantime, Williamson, during SRH’s second match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), shared an update on his fitness. The Black Caps’ skipper said that he’s available for selection in the Sunrisers’ third match against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Tuesday, September 29.

“We have had a lot of time off, the opportunity to get into the gym. We always deal with these little things and try to get on top of them sooner. Yeah, available (when asked if he’s available for the next game), ready,” Williamson was quoted as saying to the commentators.

“I guess it’s always the balance between the players you want to pick, the areas you want to address and the surfaces that you are presented with and the opposition,”  he added.

Williamson’s inclusion is expected to bolster their batting lineup to a great extent. In both the matches, their middle-order faltered owing to which they couldn’t get the needed acceleration in the death overs. Manish Pandey scored a fifty against the Knights, but his efforts went in vain.

On Saturday, September 26, SRH lost to Dinesh Karthik’s KKR by seven wickets. The Men in Gold and Purple chased down the modest target of 143 with 12 balls to spare. The SRH bowlers picked up the early wickets of Sunil Narine, Nitish Rana and Karthik. However, Shubman Gill and Eoin Morgan’s unbeaten 92-run stand saw them over the finishing line.
