The 14th match of the Indian Premier League 2020 saw action between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Yellow Army walked after the gap of six days to get something good in their account and make things respectable. However, things didn’t turn up as per their plan, and they lost the game by seven runs.
Batting first, SRH started on an average tone, but their game towards the end accelerated like anything, courtesy young Priyam Garg’s brilliant 51* off 26. The Hyderabad team went on to post a respectable 164/5 on board. Abhishek Sharma’s 24-ball 31-run knock was crucial for Hyderabad as well.
Priyam Garg was named as the player of the match for his swashbuckling knock. The brief sessions by Manish Pandey (29 off 21) and David Warner (28 off 29) also remained essential in SRH’s total score. None of the bowlers remained too impressive from the CSK lot. However, Deepak Chahar picked two wickets by conceding 31 runs in his spell.
Ravindra Jadeja’s fifty couldn’t get the game for CSK
Chasing the target, the opening order collapsed entirely, and only Faf du Plessis added his bit of 22 in the team’s score. MS Dhoni’s 47* off 36, and Ravindra Jadeja’s 50 off 35 fell some runs short ahead of the target. Rashid Khan again remained the star from SRH’s end with the ball as he conceded just 12 runs in his spell.
Losing skipper, MS Dhoni said
I was not able to middle a lot of deliveries. Was trying to hit it too hard. When the wicket is slightly at the slower side, it is better to time it. Looking at outfield it was subconsciously coming to us to hit the ball hard. Tried to get as much as time as possible. It is quite dry out here. So, the throat gets dry and you start to cough. When you have legal signs, you can take some time off. Long time back once we lost three in a row. We need to get a lot of things right. It is the professionalism. We need to take our catches not bowl no-balls.
Those are the controllables and may be we are getting too relaxed. We have been a bit too relaxed at times. After the 16th over, we had two good overs but overall we could have been slightly better. Nobody wants to drop catches but at the same at this level, we need to draw a line and say these catches that need to be taken especially when the team hasn’t been doing that outstandingly well. Catches that these can hamper your knock out stage games. It is very important to be at your best. There are plenty of positives in this game but we will try to come back strong.
Winning skipper, David Warner said
I backed him, I had no option. We tried to kill the game in the 19th over. Could have given it to Abhishek, but Samad with his height had to bowl the last one. This was a little better as compared to the last one. It was quite challenging, it’s good to see swing up front. It’s my message to the youngsters, to go out their and score some runs. These guys assessed the conditions and played well, so really really proud of them. These guys really work hard, they execute their yorkers, they excute their slower ones. These are the rewards we are getting, and hopefully we get the momentum going forward.
Man of the match, Priyam Garg said
I felt very good in there, because it’s a big stage with senior players. I wasn’t thinking too much, just playing my natural game. I think the best thing is the team management backed me after I failed in the first game. The plan was to play my shots and their bowling helped. I’ve batted with Abhishek throughout my childhood so it was easy. There’s a positive energy in the field too after such an innings. My self-belief has grown too after such an innings.
