Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won’t be going into the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs. However, the Yellow Army haven’t been down on spirits by any stretch of the imagination. The team, led by MS Dhoni, have won back-to-back games and now have five wins from their 13 matches. On Thursday, October 29, it was Ravindra Jadeja’s heroics that helped them over the finishing hurdle.

The left-hander played a magical knock to guide CSK to a six-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Chasing 173, the Super Kings were cruising at one stage when Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ambati Rayudu were milking the singles and getting the odd boundary. The former scored a stupendous half-century before getting out to Pat Cummins.

From there on, CSK lost their way and needed 27 runs to win from the last nine balls. At one end was Sam Curran, who couldn’t even score at a run-a-ball when the required rate was climbing. The pressure was on Jadeja to somehow find the boundary in the hour of need. Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson started the penultimate over reasonably, giving away a wide and a couple of singles.

But then, the pacer lost his radar. He conceded a four to Jadeja through the fine leg region. In the very next ball, Lockie bowled a waist-high full toss and Jadeja picked up two runs. The pressure got to Ferguson, who gave away a six off the free hit. In the final ball of the over, the ball sailed through fine leg for a four. The 19th over fetched as many as 20 runs and CSK were back in the hunt.

Kamlesh Nagarkoti bowled well to start with. With 10 runs needed, he gave only three runs off the first four balls. Yet another time, Jadeja bailed his team out, smashing a six over deep mid-wicket, bringing the target down to one off the final delivery. In the last ball, he finished things off with another six.

In the meantime, MS Dhoni’s wife Sakshi was on cloud 9 after Jadeja’s match-winning effort in Dubai. She took to her Instagram story and wrote, “Baap re baap!”
