It’s not often that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are seen at the bottom of the points table in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, in 2020, the same was witnessed after the team lost three out of their first four games in the championship. Nevertheless, Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson made sure that the Yellow Army get themselves up to the sixth place after three losses on the trot.

On Sunday, October 4, the Super Kings demolished Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 10 wickets, chasing down 179 with as many as 14 balls to spare. At no point in their run-chase did CSK look like falling behind the 8-ball. It was also the first time when a chasing team managed to win a game in Dubai in IPL 2020 after the team batting first, emerged victorious in seven matches in succession.

Shane Watson returns to form

Du Plessis and Watson shared an unbeaten 181-run stand off 106 balls to see their side over the finishing line. Even as the former has been in decent form, scoring 282 runs at an average of 94, Watson wasn’t going through the best of times. He had a mere 52 runs from four innings at an average of 13. Quite naturally, the pressure was on the right-hander to perform.

The ongoing IPL was also his first tournament after he turned out for the Quetta Gladiators in the 2020 Pakistan Super League (PSL) back in the month of March. But instead of getting bogged down, Watson rose to the occasion. He stayed not out on 83 runs off 53 balls with the help of 11 fours and three sixes, and he played at a strike-rate of 150.

In the meantime, one of Watson’s old tweets is doing the rounds on the social media platforms. A day after CSK’s seven-run loss at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Dubai, Watson felt that his team would be making a comeback.

He had taken to Twitter and written, “The perfect game for @ChennaiIPL is coming!!! @ChennaiIPL #WhistlePodu #Yellove.” And it happened exactly the same way as the Super Kings rose like a phoenix from the ashes with their back pushed to the walls.
