Chennai Super Kings, on Friday, won their Indian Premier League title for the fourth time as they played their ninth final in the history of the league. They beat the Eoin Morgan-led Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The Knights have been fantastic in the UAE leg of IPL 2021, but succumbed to pressure in their quest to win their third IPL title.

Faf du Plessis shines for CSK

After being sent in to bat, the Super Kings did an excellent job as they racked up the highest score in Dubai in this IPL. The Yellow Army mustered 192 for three in their 20 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis set the platform in the powerplay and stitched together a 61-run stand for the opening wicket. Sunil Narine gave KKR their first breakthrough as he got rid of Gaikwad, who scored 32 runs.

Thereafter, Faf and Robin Uthappa put on 63 runs for the second wicket off 44 balls. Uthappa made a brisk 15-ball 31 with three sixes before he became Sunil Narine’s second victim. However, Du Plessis went on to play until the very end. He stayed unbeaten on 86 off 59 with seven fours and three sixes. The right-hander got out in the last ball of the innings as Shivam Mavi dismissed him.

Knights crumble after promising start

The Knight started the run-chase on a positive note, scoring 50 runs in the powerplay. Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gill put on 91 runs for the opening wicket off 64 balls. Iyer went on to notch his fourth half-century off the series to keep KKR in the run-chase. After a good start, the Knights lost three wickets in nine balls as Iyer, Nitish Rana and Sunil Narine perished in quick succession.

Dinesh Karthik hit a six on the leg side before Jadeja got rid of him. Thereafter, the left-armer pinned Shakib Al Hasan for a golden duck. From there on, the Knights kept going down the barrel. Gill racked up a fifty, but got out with the required rate around 12. Lockie Ferguson and Shivam Mavi threw their bats around for a brief while, but the writing was already on the walls for the Knights.
