The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai lived up to his reputation as the viewers were entertained with another low-scoring thriller. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) finally have a win under their belt as playing against Punjab Kings (PBKS), they registered a victory by nine wickets.

Punjab Kings’ skipper KL Rahul won the toss and decided to put a total on the board first. Entering the contest, Punjab made many changes to their batting line-up as they included two all-rounders, Moises Henriques and Fabien Allen after a horrible collapse against Chennai Super Kings. However, the reinforcements didn’t work out well for the Punjab-based franchise.

They started off on a disappointing note as the opening batsman and skipper KL Rahul lost his wicket in the fourth over only while playing at 4 off 6 balls. After this many PBKS batters got a start but they failed to convert it into something substantial. Following the dismissal of Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Chris Gayle looked promising but failed to adapt to the surface as they lost their wickets at 22 and 15 respectively.

PBKS batting line-up crumbled like a pack of cards as Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers went all guns blazing against the opposition. It was a combined effort by SRH as they restricted Punjab to a paltry total of 120 runs. Khaleel Ahmed was the pick of the bowler for the Orange Army as he picked three wickets while Abhishek Sharma had two under his belt.

Jonny Bairstow drives SRH to their first victory

Just like the PBKS batters, the bowlers also put up a disappointing show as they couldn’t pose any threat to Hyderbad batters. SRH were careful in their approach as they kept their calm in the chase and tried their best to not repeat the past mistakes. The explosive opening duo of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow stitched a crucial partnership of 73 runs. 

Warner and Bairstow took the opposition batters to the cleaners as they hammered the ball with ease to drive the team towards victory. The only success for Punjab bowlers came on the first ball of the 11th over as Fabian Allen managed to pick the wicket of the opposition skipper.

After the dismissal of Warner, Kane Williamson, and Jonny took the team to its first victory in IPL 2021 by chasing 121 within 18.4 overs. Bairstow emerged as the highest run-getter with 63 runs from 56 deliveries including three boundaries and three sixes.
