Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were involved in the first Super Over of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Delhi dominated the match for a larger portion of time but SRH somehow made the comeback towards the end to drive the game towards the Super Over. However, in the end, DC managed to have the last laugh as they won the Super Over to climb to the second position.

The last clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai commenced with Rishabh Pant winning the toss and inviting the hosts to field first. Batting first, Delhi Capitals got off to a turbulent start as Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw collected 51 runs without any loss. The googly master Rashid Khan gave the first breakthrough to the Sunrisers Hyderabad as he scalped the crucial wicket of Dhawan in the 11th over while he was playing at 28 off 26.

Dhawan was followed by Prithvi Shaw to the pavilion. Shaw was dismissed due to a terrible mix-up in the middle and a run-out brought an end to his spectacular knock of 53 runs in just 39 balls. The two back-to-back wickets slowed down the pace of Delhi’s innings.

However, Rishabh Pant and Steve Smith stitched a crucial partnership of 58 runs to propel the Capitals towards a total of 159 runs in their 20 overs. Pant played a sublime knock of 37 runs off 27 balls while Smith also added 34 runs to the scoreboard. For SRH, Siddharth Kaul was the pick of the bowler with two wickets while Rashid also had one under his belt.

Axar Patel takes DC home in the Super Over

Chasing 160, Hyderabad lost their skipper David Warner in the fourth over owing to a run-out. Though Jonny Bairstow showed courage by smashing 38 off just 18 runs, he lost his wicket to young Avesh Khan in the sixth over. This was followed by Kane Williamson holding his fort at one end and showing his class by adding 66 runs in just 51 balls.

However, Kane didn’t get any support from the other batters as they lost their wickets continuously. A small yet efficient cameo by Jagadeesha Suchith of 14 off 6 resulted in SRH also scoring 159 runs. Thus, the two teams and the fans headed towards the first Super Over of the season.

In the Super Over, in a surprising turn of events, Axar Patel was handed the ball in front of Kane and Warner. Axar was at his fluent best with the ball as he gave away just seven runs. Chasing eight, Rishabh Pant and Shikhar Dhawan outplayed Rashid Khan to score eight runs off six balls.
