The 20th match of the Indian Premier League saw action between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals and fans got to witness the first Super Over of the season. DC won the match in a Super Over thriller and stepped up on the 2nd slot in the points table. After owning the toss, DC men walked the field with bats first and posted respectable 159 runs on the board.

Prithvi Shaw (53 off 39) and Rishabh Pant (37 off 27) starred with the bat and assisted Delhi to touch the 160-run mark. Shaw was declared as the player of the match for his essential contribution with the bat. Siddharth Kaul picked two wickets for the team while star spinner Rashid Khan bowled with a fine economy (7.75) for DC.

Chasing up the target, David Warner left early but then, Jonny Bairstow and Kane Williamson shouldered the responsibilities well for SRH. Bairstow played a subtle knock of 38 runs while Williamson remained unbeaten on 66. However, it was again felt that Super Over and Kane didn’t get along well, and the match ended in Delhi’s favour. Avesh Khan continued his golden form for DC as he picked three wickets for the team.

Losing skipper, David Warner said:

It has been a tough one. The way our bowlers came back after the powerplay was fantastic. We knew on this surface if you got off to a flier it is always going to be tough in the middle, the bowlers executed well. I thought Vijay, who is not one of our strike bowlers, bowled fantastically, could have bowled him an extra one, that’s the handiness of having him in the middle but the bowlers got us to a good total to chase. Obviously Jonny at the top of the order and Kane taking it deep, we couldn’t bat well in the middle overs. It depends on the selectors, it was a harsh call as per my opinion (On leaving out Manish Pandey). But at the end of the day it is a decision that they took and you cannot discredit Virat, he’s a very good player and the surface was difficult. They bowled well in the middle and made it challenging for us. If you hit the ball to a world class fielder, you are going to get run out 9 times out of 10 (about his run out).

Stand-in skipper, Shikhar Dhawan said:

Absolutely, a thrilling game. It shouldn’t have gone to the Super Over. We should have done it easily. But, it’s part of the game. It was very tough to bat especially after powerplay. It was turning and holding. Kane Williamson played a very good knock, he’s a champion player, but good to win it in the end. Those little things [one short] make a huge impact and we got an edge over that and we ended up winning the game. Glad the Ahmedabad wicket will be better than this one.

Player of the match, Prithvi Shaw said:

It was a good wicket in the first six overs and then slowed down a little bit. I felt the wicket was slow and the spinners were bowling well. It was not easy to score against Rashid. I thought 160 was good to defend, but a close game. I’m just doing the stuff that I have worked with. I didn’t think about the Super Over, and I think Axar bowled really well in that Super Over. I wasn’t there [for the Super Over meeting]. I knew Rashid will bowl for sure and Shikhar and Pant will open for sure.
