After bossing through the Mumbai leg, Chennai Super Kings started their Delhi leg of the Indian Premier League 2021 with a win over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday, April 28. Chasing 172, Chennai completed the chase easily in 18.3 overs with seven wickets in hand. This was Chennai’s fifth win in six matches this season.

Earlier in the evening, Hyderabad skipper David Warner might have got it wrong when he won the toss and elected to bat first. Sam Curran struck early in the innings, dismissing his countryman, Jonny Bairstow in the powerplay. After this, Manish Pandey and David Warner stabilized the innings, but at a slow rate.

Warner struggled to find his timing but it should be noted that the CSK bowlers did a good job when they were bowling to the SRH captain. The pair put on a stand of 106 runs for the second wicket, the only issue was that they took 85 balls to do that. Warner, in particular, batted slower than usual, scoring 57 runs from 55 balls.

Pandey, on the other end, managed 61 runs from 46 balls. When the two batsmen got out, Hyderabad’s innings picked up the pace, courtesy of some well-calculated hitting by Kane Williamson. He scored 26 runs from just 10 balls. He found good support in Kedar Jadhav, who chipped in with 12 runs from four balls. The late hitting took Sunrisers’ score to 171 for 3. Apart from Curran, Lungi Ngidi picked up two scalps for CSK.

CSK openers set up the chase with a 129-run stand

When Chennai came out to bat, they did seem like the favourites. However, it didn’t take their openers Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad too long before they reassured their chance in the match. The duo put on an opening stand of 129 runs. The two batsmen raced away with the pace of the game, easily chunking runs. They made batting look quite easy.

Ruturaj showed why he is highly rated as he notched up his second fifty of the tournament. He eventually got out for 75 runs from 44 balls to Rashid Khan, after hitting the leggie for three fours. Rashid further dismissed Moeen Ali for an 8-ball 15 and Faf du Plessis, who made 56 runs from 38 balls. But Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina took CSK home with scores of 7 and 17 respectively.
