Chennai Super Kings have managed to reclaim their top spot in the points table in the 2021 edition of the IPL. The MS Dhoni-led team, on Sunday, defeated Mumbai Indians by 20 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. MI, in the meantime, kept gasping for breath in the T20 league. The five-time IPL champions stayed at the fifth spot with four wins and as many losses in the event.

Gaikwad powers CSK

The Super Kings found themselves in all sorts of trouble after batting first. Trent Boult and Adam Milne picked up two wickets each and reduced CSK to 24/4 at the end of the powerplay. To add insult to CSK’s injury, Ambati Rayudu had to retire hurt for a duck after copping a blow on his left hand. MS Dhoni nailed a pull shot, but hit it straight down the throat of Boult at deep square leg.

It was Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja’s 81-run stand that steadied the ship for the Super Kings. Gaikwad was circumspect to start with, but got to his fifty off 41 balls. From there on, he stepped on the gas and stayed unbeaten on a 58-ball 88 with nine fours and four sixes. Dwayne Bravo injected impetus into the innings with an eight-ball 23, lifting CSK to 156 in their 20 overs.

Saurabh Tiwary’s efforts go in vain

Quinton de Kock started off MI’s run-chase with three fours before Deepak Chahar trapped him plumb in front. Anmolpreet Singh, who opened in place of Rohit Sharma, looked promising, but became Chahar’s second victim. Suryakumar Yadav tried to clear the infield only to find Faf du Plessis at mid-off. Ishan Kishan became Bravo’s first victim in only the latter’s second delivery.

Kieron Pollard smashed Jadeja for a six downtown after which Josh Hazlewood got him out LBW. Krunal Pandya had to face the wrong side of luck as he was run out at the striker’s end. The onus was then on Saurabh Tiwary to take MI home. The left-hander scored 50 runs off 40 balls with five fours, but to his dismay, his efforts weren’t enough for the Super Kings to win the encounter.
