Kolkata Knight Riders have managed to secure a nine-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday, September 20 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. RCB mostly have dominated KKR in the last three seasons, but the Knights didn’t let the pressure get the better of them. The win has also taken the Men in Gold and Purple to the fifth spot below Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians.

KKR bowlers make hay

After winning the toss, nothing went right for the Challengers as they were shot out for 92 in 19 overs. After Prasidh Krishna trapped Virat Kohli in front, Devdutt Padikkal and KS Bharat played some gorgeous shots. The duo stitched together a stand of 31 runs to take RCB off to a stead start. But once both batters perished in a space of 13 balls, the RCB batting crumbled like a house of cards.

Varun Chakravarthy was the standout KKR bowler as he picked up three wickets for 13 runs. Andre Russell sent back the dangerous AB de Villiers for a golden duck. Russell also accounted for three wickets. Wanindu Hasaranga also bagged a golden duck on IPL debut. Lockie Ferguson picked up two scalps and looked sharp. Sunil Narine couldn’t get a wicket, but kept a check on the run-scoring.

Knights race to victory

In the run-chase, the Knights started on an aggressive note. Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gill made sure that RCB didn’t get a hint of a chance of get a foothold back into the contest. The duo scored 56 runs in the powerplay and brought the required run rate down to 2.64. From there on, the run-chase more or less became a mere formality as the Challengers kept gasping for breath in Abu Dhabi.

Gill, who looked lacklustre in the first half of the IPL 2021, took the attacking approach and tasted quite a bit of success. The opening batter racked up on a 34-ball 48, laced with six fours and one six. Iyer, on IPL debut, didn’t look nervous. The left-hander raced his way to an 27-ball 41 with seven fours and one six. RCB, in the meantime, will be looking to make amends in the next game.
