Bowlers ruled the show at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai as Mumbai Indians locked horns against Kolkata Knight Riders in the fifth match of the ongoing 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite a poor batting performance by the Mumbai Indians in the first innings, they didn’t lose hope and executed disciplined bowling to register their first win in IPL 2021.

The temperament shown by MI bowlers in the death overs and a horrific collapse of KKR’s batting order resulted in the defending champions winning the game by 10 runs. Entering the contest, KKR made no changes in their Playing XI from the previous match against SRH, while MI replaced the opening batsman Chris Lynn with Quinton de Kock.

The toss went in the favour of Eoin Morgan and he invited Mumbai to bat first. MI succumbed to a torrid start as they lost de Kock in the second over only. However, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav scripted a crucial partnership of 76 runs. Surya was all set in the middle after scoring 56 runs off 36 deliveries but Shakib Al Hasan trapped the batsman in the 11th over to give a much-needed breakthrough to his team.

The same was followed by a collapse of MI’s batting line-up as Andre Russell took a five-wicket haul to restrict the opposition to a below-par total of 152 runs in 20 overs.

Rahul Chahar takes MI home

Chasing 153, the Knight Riders got off to an explosive start as Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana collected 72 runs in the first nine overs to make KKR the favorites to win the game. Though Gill lost his wicket in the ninth over, Rana held his fort and one end and continued his exploits with the willow. KKR needed just 31 runs off 30 deliveries with six wickets in hand.

However, the splendid bowling by Rahul Chahar brought MI back into the game as he took the wicket of Rana in the 15th over. Then started a horrible collapse of the two-time champions and a bowling masterclass by the defending champions. Towards the end, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell looked settled and possessed the ability to take KKR home.

However, Russell marched back to the pavilion in the last over after scoring 9 off 15 while Karthik remained not out with 8 off 11. For Mumbai, Rahul Chahar was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets while Trent Boult also managed to pick two in the last over. Thus, KKR lost the game by 10 runs.
