Punjab Kings, on Thursday, beat the Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. With the victory, they moved up to fifth in the points table and somehow held on to their chances of making it through to the playoffs. But their fate isn’t in their hands anymore. As far as the Super Kings are concerned, they finished the league stage with a hattrick of losses.
Faf du Plessis stands tall for CSK
After being put in to bat first, the Super Kings had their stutters from the start and they got up to 134 for the loss of six wickets. The Yellow Army were reduced to 61 for five in 12 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad succumbed to back-to-back failures after Arshdeep Singh nipped him out. Moeen Ali, Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu couldn’t get into double digits. Thereafter, Faf du Plessis took over.
The opener played until the very last over and scored a 55-ball 76 on a seemingly difficult strip to bat on. His knock was laced with eight fours and two sixes and it was on the back of his knock that CSK got past the 120-run mark. His 67-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja helped the Super Kings to respectability. Arshdeep and Chris Jordan picked up two wickets apiece. Harpreet Brar also did well.
KL Rahul takes PBKS home
The run-chase turned out to be completely one-sided as the PBKS batter came out all guns blazing. KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal played their strokes freely and put on 46 for the opening wicket off 4.3 overs. Shardul Thakur trapped Mayank in front to strike first blood. Rahul, at the other end, looked at his very best. The Orange Cap holder raced to a half-century off a mere 25 balls.
The PBKS skipper batted until the very end and stayed unbeaten on 98 off 42 balls with the help of seven fours and eight sixes. The opener played at a strike rate of 233.33, showing how destructive he can be at the top of the order. Shahrukh Khan and Aiden Markram hit a six apiece. Shardul Thakur was expensive, but he looked like the only bowler, who seemed to have made an impact for CSK.
