Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull has pointed out a potential reason which led to the sacking of the Sunrisers Hyderabad captain, David Warner, in the middle of the IPL 2021 season. The cricketer turned commentator expressed that the sacking could be a result of a fall-out between Warner and Sunrisers’ management.

Doull noted during an interaction, Warner’s recent comments on Manish Pandey’s snub from the playing XI could have not gone down well with the Sunrisers’ team management. The incident happened recently after an IPL match when Warner was asked about Pandey’s absence from the side, despite runs on the back.

To this, Warner responded by saying that the decision is harsh but it has been made by the selectors. The Australian’s comments felt a bit confusing, considering that the team selection generally depends on the captain and management. However, Warner didn’t want to take the bullet and instead had a note of criticism as he said that the harsh call was taken by the ‘selectors.’

I think there must have been a falling out somewhere along the lines: Simon Doull

“I think there must have been a falling out somewhere along the lines and not with the team, there has to be a falling out with the coaching structure. After what he said in that game about leaving Manish Pandey out, it was not his decision at all, he didn’t want to do it clearly. And basically, you passed the buck, you blamed it on someone else and I think he has paid the price for that,” said Doull while speaking to Cricbuzz.

The former fast-bowler, Doull, further noted the way SRH has handled its management. Tom Moody was a successful coach for them before he was sacked. Trevor Bayliss, the World Cup-winning coach, was then brought into the franchise as a coach. However, Moody once again joined the team as the director of cricket. Doull said that Sunrisers’ performance in this season of the IPL could be a direct result of this dynamic.

“That dynamic… you sack a coach, Tom Moody, you employ Trevor Bayliss and then you bring Tom Moody back to oversee your cricket. I don’t know how that relationship can possibly work. And I wonder whether one [win] in 5 (6) is the direct result of that relationship not working… And the press release suggests that he [David Warner] won’t even play now that’s even more strange,” Doull added.
