The Gujarat Titans thumped Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in the final of the IPL 2022 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on May 29 and by the virtue of this win, they registered their first Indian Premier League title triumph, and that too in their very first appearance in the tournament.

RR skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler did provide a good start for the Royals, but they started losing quick wickets after the powerplay. Only Buttler looked set having read the pitch before captain Hardik Pandya sent him back to the dugout in the 13th over for 39 runs. A disciplined bowling performance from Gujarat restricted them to 130/9.

Hardik was the pick of the bowlers with 3/17 and R Sai Kishore registered 2/20 while the likes of Mohammed Shami, Yash Dayal, and Rashid Khan took a wicket each.

Shubman Gill powers GT to their maiden title

In reply, RR almost struck in the first over, but Yuzvendra Chahal dropped a sitter at forward square leg. That eventually proved to be a costly miss as Gill punished the Rajasthan bowlers and single-handedly took the responsibility of anchoring the Gujarat chase. While the 2008 winners did dismiss the top-order, Gill stood firmly like a wall and added finishing touches along with David Miller. He remained unbeaten on 45 runs from 43 deliveries. As far as Rajasthan’s bowling is concerned, Trent Boult, Prasidh Krishna, and Yuzvendra Chahal picked up one wicket apiece.

Wriddhiman Saha said:

This is my fifth final and the second final I have won, someone said our team was not good after the auctions, but we proved them wrong. The first ball he bowled was outstanding [on Shami’s first ball in their first game which got KL Rahul out], everyone contributed and it was a team performance.

Mohammed Shami said:

We needed to start the tournament well (on the first ball dismissal of KL in the team’s first game), set up a template for the team. The idea was only to start well for the team, concentrate on the line and length. We (himself and Saha) have known each other well for the last 20 years and have a good understanding as well.

Matthew Wade said:

Just the team environment, relaxing environment, Hardik, Rashid were leading from the front. It was a family atmosphere, everyone felt welcome, Ashish [Nehra] ensured that. Here everyone gets net time, everyone gets a chance. It has been amazing, hopefully we can come back next year in front of these fans.

Rashid Khan said:

We assessed the wicket well, we knew it would be hard to chase down 150. Everyone had to take responsibility, we did well to come back well in the middle overs. He is the only guy whom we didn’t want to bowl to and I’m happy that he’s part of our team (on Shubman Gill), Biggest achievement of your career is to be part of a winning IPL team. You always want to do well in big competitions like this. Winning tournaments like this, you’ll need to put in a lot of hard work and this is certainly a high point of my career.

David Miller said:

It’s been a phenomenal journey, finishing it at the back end was a special feeling, but it has been a collective effort, everyone has stuck up their hand and performed well. (On Pandya) He’s been very relaxed, we’ve had a very good bond with Ashish (Nehra) and Hardik. He’s got better and better as the competition gone on, tactically he’s been brilliant. Just grown from strength to strength.

Lockie Ferguson said:

I couldn’t be more rapped for the boys, finishing with a win. (On his fastest delivery) Very proud of the boys for the way they bowled. Hardik was superb too, he led from the front.

Shubman Gill said:

It means a lot. After winning the under-19 World Cup, winning the IPL is just as big. It is my fourth year. I wanted to be there till the end and that was the talk with the coaches. Glad I took them over the line. Our bowlers bowled really well to restrict them to 130. We wanted to keep them under 150 but fortunately it was much lesser.

Rahul Tewatia said:

There was a relaxed atmosphere during Qualifier 1, we knew we were playing well this season. The plan was to take it deep and for the finishers to finish. I don’t know about the party, when at the beginning of the season, someone asked me what were my goals, I told them there was no personal goals but it will be great if we could win. It was a new team, new environment and don’t know about the party tonight but I won’t be sleeping. After the auctions there were saying our team had batsmen short, experienced batsmen short but the way the management backed David [Miller] and me was good. The captain trusts me and keeps telling me to trust your game and keep finishing like you do.

Gary Kirsten said:

It’s fantastic, really happy for the guys, they’ve put a lot into the tournament, great for Ashish (Nehra) and Vikram (Solanki) as well. You’re looking for good balance, good depth in the auction but most importantly you’re looking for players who can different roles, the one thing we’ve learnt with Ashish is finding guys who were versatile, and at 4, 5 and 6 – we’ve got that. (On different players winning Man of the Match) We all got energy out of it, we’ve had a great bowling attack – through the end we went a bowler strong and a batter light, but we were always confident, just to get good balance in the team. Sai Kishore came into the team as a left-arm spinner and did really well as well. (On Pandya) He has been fantastic, I’ve looked working with him. He’s a high-profile player in India but he’s incredibly humble, wanting to learn as a leader and engage with his players which I thing is really, really important. He’s tried to help the youngsters, he’s come in and played a different responsibility. You never stop learning as a coach, every IPL is a learning experience, that’s what I enjoy. I’ve loved working with Ashish, he’s really strong tactically – trying to put a gameplan together on the fly is not easy. There are so many variable in each game, but what I’ve enjoyed has been the responsibility players have taken to win games for us. (On playing in Ahmedabad) It is amazing to win in our first season. We came out here pre-season to do a bit of training and it was empty, you could hear an echo here, so it is great to come back and get a full stadium.

RR head coach, Kumar Sangakkara said:

The way the team’s really focussed, gelled together and played a lot of good cricket. Went through ups and downs. We had huge contributions from Jos, from the two spinners, Boulty, we had McCoy coming in, Hetmyer. Can go on and on. Have a strong core of around 9 players, changed a few others based on form, opposition. It’s been a great journey, great franchise to be part of.

Player of the Match, Hardik Pandya said:

Wanted to show at the right time what I’ve worked hard for. Today was the day from the bowling point of view I saved the best for the best. Second ball of my spell when I got Sanju out, saw that if you hit the wicket hard and hit the seam something is gonna happen. All about sticking to the right lengths, asking the batters to play the right shots. For me my team is the most important. I’ve always been that kind of individual. If I were to have a worse season and my team wins, I’ll take that. Batting comes first to me, always going to be close to my heart. When we got the auction done it was clear I had to bat higher to guide.

Player of the Tournament, Jos Buttler said:

Exceeded all my expectations apart from today – the trophy we really wanted. Disappointed with that. Big congratulations to Hardik and team. Deserving champions. My goals are to play my role for the team and try and react on the day regarding what the game is asking me to do. In good teams you have a lot of trust in everyone. We have huge trust in everyone in our team. Very grateful for the opportunity to play today. Disappointed – that’s completely natural. Have lost plenty of finals in my career unfortunately. Today’s been an amazing occasion, been a fantastic tournament. Having had two years without crowds, to come here and play has been an absolute privilege. And for all the young guys in our team to soak it up, and use the hurt from today to push on further for the rest of your career.

Losing skipper, Sanju Samson said:

This season was really special for us. Last two-three seasons all the fans, everyone was having a really hard time. Good to give them some happy moments. Really proud of my team. Great youngsters, great senior players. One off day today but really proud of my team. Right from the auctions we wanted to have quality bowlers, they win you tournaments.

Winning skipper, Hardik Pandya said:

This is the right example for any team in the world. If you can play as a team and build a good unit with genuine people around, wonders can happen. I and Ashu pa, we like to play proper bowlers. Batters can obviously chip in, but most of the time I have seen in T20 cricket – it’s a batter’s game but bowlers win you games. A lot of times we won the games as well, but we always spoke about what are the things we missed out and how we can get better from here. Everyone chipped in. Count myself lucky winning 5 finals, it’s been exciting. This is going to be a special one. We spoke about creating a legacy. Generation to come, everyone will remember this was the team who started this journey and to win the championship first year is very special.”
