Chennai Super Kings (CSK) haven’t performed to the expectations in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season. They are the defending champions but haven’t played like one thanks to the mega auction that took place in February with team combinations changing to a huge extent. Their most expensive pick Deepak Chahar was ruled out of the action early in the season. It was a telling blow while New Zealand quick Adam Milne also suffered an injury to get ruled out midway even as he could only play one match.
Moreover, with the retained and brought back CSK players not performing to the expectations has led to the team winning only three out of their 10 matches so far. Ravindra Jadeja was made the skipper ahead of the season but he has already handed back the reins to MS Dhoni. However, the veteran couldn’t change the team’s fortunes under his captaincy with CSK winning and losing one game each since then. CSK’s recent loss came against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
It hurt their playoffs chances significantly. While many are ruling them out of the contention for a place in the top four, the four-time champions can still get to 14 points provided they win their last four matches. Moreover, the MS Dhoni-led side will need a few other results to go their way out of the next 17 matches left in the league stage. The permutations and combinations are little too many for their liking but funny things have happened in the IPL before and no team can be ruled out until the last moment.
One thing is for sure that CSK will only get to the fourth position if they end up winning their last four matches and the net run-rate will also come into the picture. So not only they will have to win all the four games, CSK will also have to make sure that they win at least a couple of them by a big margin.
Meanwhile, here are the results of the other 13 matches which need to go CSK’s way in order for them to make it to the playoffs:
First requirement: CSK will have to win all their remaining four matches against DC, MI, GT and RR.
Second requirement: Below are the listed results that need to go in CSK’s favour for them to qualify for the playoffs.
Match | Favourable winner for CSK |
SRH vs RCB | SRH |
MI vs KKR | MI |
LSG vs GT | LSG or GT |
RR vs DC | RR |
RCB vs PBKS | PBKS |
KKR vs SRH | KKR |
LSG vs RR | LSG or RR |
PBKS vs DC | DC |
MI vs SRH | MI |
KKR vs LSG | LSG |
RCB vs GT | GT |
MI vs DC | MI |
SRH vs PBKS | SRH or PBKS |
If all the matches go according to the above table, then CSK and either SRH or PBKS will tie at 14 points at the end of the league stage and the team with better net run-rate will make it to the playoffs.
