The first match of the Indian Premier League 2022 kicked off on a high note when Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders faced each other. It was a battle worth watching as KKR planned their revenge perfectly against the defending champions to come back from their 2021 finals loss and defeat CSK by six wickets.

Umesh Yadav gave the perfect start to KKR as he dismissed the CSK openers in the powerplay, that is the first six overs. After giving away the first ball as a no-ball, Yadav dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad for a four-ball duck in the first over, followed by Conway’s wicket in the third over.

It was vintage Dhoni who led CSK towards a par score. The former captain of the franchise, who has been criticized for the past two years, scored a 50*(38) and shared a 50+ run stand with the current skipper Ravindra Jadeja. MS Dhoni smashed his first 50 since IPL 2019 and took 29 innings (after 28th innings) to achieve this feat.

In the second innings, KKR had to chase 132 runs in 20 overs. Ajinkya Rahane opened the game for KKR alongside Venkatesh Iyer. The former was in a form like never before. He proved his worth in the game and led the chase from the front. He timed his shots to perfection and scored some really good boundaries. CSK went wicketless in the powerplay as the KKR openers gave the perfect start to their side.

CSK surely felt Deepak Chahar’s absence, who’s a specialist in picking wickets in the powerplay. It was Dwayne Bravo who held the bowling attack as he dismissed Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana, and Sam Billings during KKR’s chase. Shreyas Iyer stood at 20*(19) to end the game for his team. The score was clearly not enough to defend on a pitch like the Wankhede’s, and it seemed like a cakewalk for KKR batters, looking at the way they perceived their game.
