Shubman Gill played a majestic knock of 96 runs off just 59 deliveries but it was Rahul Tewatia who haunted the Punjab side again as he blasted two sixes off the last two balls of the match to chase down the target of 190 runs for his team. Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated the Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six wickets in Match 16 of IPL 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai to win three out of the three matches played in this campaign.

Talking about how the encounter panned out, captain Hardik Pandya won the toss for the Titans and elected to field first. They made two changes as Sai Sudharsan and Darshan Nalkande replaced Vijay Shankar and Varun Aaron respectively. The Kings made just one change, replacing Bhanuka Rajapaksa with England international Jonny Bairstow. Mayank Agarwal’s horror run extended as he registered his third single-digit score in a row.

Punjab’s decision to go for Bairstow didn’t work out as he managed just eight runs. Shikhar Dhawan made 35 runs while Liam Livingstone was again at his brutal best, smashing a half-century in just 21 balls, the second-fastest of this season. He recorded back-to-back fifties as he amassed 64 runs off 27 balls with seven fours and four sixes. Bowlers Rahul Chahar and Arshdeep Singh added 27 runs for the tenth wicket as the Kings finished with 189/9. Rashid Khan was the star with the ball for the Titans as he took 3/22 in four overs.

Chasing 190 to win, wicketkeeper Matthew Wade amassed just six runs. Newbie Sai Sudharsan was impressive as he mustered 35 runs off 30 deliveries. But it was all about the classy Gill as he slammed 11 fours and a six in his 96-run knock, which is also his highest score in the IPL now.

Skipper Hardik made 27 runs off 18 balls and with 12 needed off the final two balls, Rahul Tewatia turned the Brabourne stadium into Sharjah as he hammered two sixes off Odean Smith to destroy Punjab again as he did in the 2020 edition. For his scintillating innings, Shubman Gill was declared the Player of the Match.

Meanwhile, here are some of the important stats and numbers from Match 16 between Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League 2022:
