Match 40 of the Indian Premier League 2022 witnessed the Gujarat Titans clash against the in-form Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. SRH was on a five-match winning trot, whereas GT had their place intact in the top four of the points table with consistent all-around performance. SRH’s efforts went in vain as GT all-rounders snatched away the victory from the jaws of defeat, winning the match by five wickets.

To start the game, Mohammed Shami was on fire, knocking skipper Kane Williamson and Rahul Tripathi, two key elements within the SRH batting lineup, cheaply. However, a 96-run stand between Abhishek Sharma and Aiden Markram put their team back into the game as they two compiled their half-century knocks. The Gujarat Titans demonstrated why they are the greatest death bowling team in the league by consistently pegging Hyderabad back with clusters of breakthroughs. 180 appeared improbable at one point, but Shashank Singh’s magnificent cameo towards the end enabled his team to reach 195 after 25 runs came off the final over of the first innings.

All-rounders shine as GT triumph by five wickets

Coming into the chase, the opening pair of Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill posted 59 runs in the powerplay, their highest powerplay score in the tournament so far. While the first six overs proved costly for SRH, Umran Malik came into the attack to rescue SRH as he created havoc on the field. He picked not just one, but five big wickets as he dismissed all (five) the batters of the GT lineup one after the other, breaking all the partnerships and defending his team’s total.

But all his efforts went in vain when Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia shared a match-winning partnership and smashed multiple boundaries to win the match on the very last ball of the game. Four sixes came off the last over as Khan contributed three from his end. Not to forget, Saha’s contribution with the bat (68 off 38) gave a brilliant start to GT, and his knock was absolutely magnificent. A destructive game and one of the most thrilling chases came to an end after GT pulled off another heist.
