Mitchell Marsh slammed his second consecutive fifty while Shardul Thakur took 4/36 as Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 17 runs in Match 64 of IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Marsh continued from where he left in the last match and scored 63 off 48, with four fours and three sixes to help his team register their seventh victory this season.

Talking about how the match panned out, captain Mayank Agarwal won the toss and elected to field. Pant’s side got off to a disastrous start as they lost David Warner on the very first ball of the match while Sarfaraz played a quickfire innings of 32 runs off 16 deliveries. The Aussie all-rounder kept things going for his side with skipper Pant and Rovman Powell getting out cheaply for just seven and two runs respectively.

Lalit Yadav scored 24 runs while Axar Patel remained unbeaten on 17 runs to take his side to a defendable total of 159/7. Arshdeep Singh and Liam Livingstone were the pick of the bowlers for PBKS for snaring three scalps each. The latter gave away just 27 runs in his four-over spell including crucial wickets of Warner, Pant, and Powell.

Chasing 160 to win, openers Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan amassed 28 and 19 runs respectively. Thakur got two wickets of Dhawan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa in the final over of the powerplay to start the collapse of PBKS. Livingstone managed only three runs while skipper Mayank’s horrendous campaign continued as he grabbed a duck.

PBKS were 82/7 when Jitesh Sharma took charge, scoring 44 runs off 34 balls before falling to Thakur. Rahul Chahar contributed with 25 runs but it wasn’t enough with PBKS getting restricted to 142/9 in 20 overs. Spinners Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets apiece in support of Thakur.

With this win, the Capitals displaced Royal Challengers Bangalore to occupy the fourth spot with 14 points, while the Kings find themselves in the seventh position with 12 points. For his match-winning spell, Shardul won the Player of the Match award.
