The Punjab Kings signed off their IPL 2022 campaign with an emphatic five-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 22. While both teams had nothing to lose in this inconsequential clash having been knocked out earlier this week, the contest saw the 1000th six of this tournament being hit by Liam Livingstone.

SRH’s stand-in captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar won the toss and elected to bat first. After youngster Priyam Garg was dismissed cheaply, his opening partner Abhishek Sharma took the initiative of doing the bulk of the scoring and also got some support from Rahul Tripathi (20) and Aiden Markram (21).

Sharma was dismissed for 43 runs from 32 deliveries and handy knocks from Washington Sundar (25) and Romario Shepherd (26*) took Hyderabad to 157/8. Harpreet Brar (3/26) and Nathan Ellis (3/40) were the picks of the bowlers for Punjab while Kagiso Rabada took one wicket.

In reply, Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan meant business right away as they provided a brisk start before the former was dismissed for a 15-ball 23. Dhawan’s blistering knock also came to an end after getting well set in the middle, scoring 39 runs off 32 balls.

Just when SRH sensed an outside chance, Liam Livingstone completely dashed their hopes in the middle overs as he scored an unbeaten match-winning 22-ball 49 as PBKS got past the line in the 16th over itself. Fazalhaq Farooqi starred with 2/32 while Washington Sundar, Jagadeesha Suchith, and Umran Malik picked a wicket apiece.

Losing skipper, Bhuvneshwar Kumar said:

“Good feeling (on being the captain), but it would have been better if we had won the match. I think we were a lot of runs short (with them winning with 5 overs left), but we had to field better, didn’t take our chances and there were fumbles, but this was the last match of the season and that does have an effect. We won 5 on the bounce and had the momentum, but it didn’t go our way and we pretty much lost all our matches in the second half of the tournament. We will have to look at our squad and the management will have to work out on the weaknesses ahead of the next season. Have had many positives, Umran Malik and Abhishek Sharma were the obvious positives, but we have a decent core of batting with Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran coming up pretty well. As for me, it was a challenging season with injuries hampering me, thought I did a decent job and will look to come back better in the next season.”

Winning skipper, Mayank Agarwal said:

“It’s going to be sore, probably going for an X-ray now. They never expected a no-ball, so he wasn’t ready. I asked him (Malik) whether he was wearing a protective gear and he shouldn’t get hurt. There are a lot of positives for us. The way Livingstone batted, Dhawan played well. Bairstow since the time he started to open. If we go out there and play the kind of cricket we play, we can do well in the next season. We couldn’t stitch two back-to-back wins. We lost wickets in a cluster, and that at times derailed us. We have played an aggressive brand of cricket over all. We are going to sit and discuss now after the IPL. We were here to get two points and we were here to enjoy ourselves.”

Player of the Match, Harpreet Brar said:

“When we came here, we thought it was a good pitch for the spinners. I have conceded runs and so have the other spinners in the tournament, so I wanted to finish on a good note today. I just tried to bowl in the right areas and I wanted to keep calm under pressure. I tried to work on my skills as much as possible. Felt good after getting his (Markram’s) wicket. I got some turn and bounce on that ball, pleased that he got stumped. I am happy for Arshdeep, now that he will play for India. That is what every player dreams of, playing for their country one day. I need to improve on few areas before the next season. I have been away from home since 3-4 months, so I want to spend some time with my family.”
