The eighth match of the IPL 2022 saw Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lock horns with each other at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. While PBKS was entering the game after an impressive five-wicket win against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), KKR on the other hand was handed a three-wicket defeat by RCB in the last game.

Winning the toss, KKR elected to bowl first. KKR relied on Umesh Yadav to get them a breakthrough in the powerplay, and so he stood up to their expectations. PBKS was reduced to 2/1 at the end of the first over. Bhanuka Rajapaksa was on fire when he walked in, as he aimed towards the boundary from the start, and hit Shivam Mavi for three sixes, apart from multiple fours taking his strike rate to 344.44.

But it was Mavi who had the last laugh when he dismissed him on the ninth ball that he faced. PBKS’ downfall started after Rajapaksa’s wicket. Nine of the 11 players were dismissed for a score below 20, and PBKS ended up scoring just 137 runs as they were all out in 18.2 overs. Every bowler except for Varun Chakravarthy picked a minimum of one wicket, and Umesh Yadav stole the show with his 4/23 in four overs, which included a maiden.

KKR defeat PBKS by six wickets

KKR had to chase 138 runs in 20 overs as Ajinkya Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer opened with the bat. It looked like an easy chase, but KKR hadn’t thought that they’d lose four wickets during the chase. Rahane, 12(11), and Venkatesh 3(7) had to take an early exit in the powerplay, courtesy to Kagiso Rabada and Odean Smith.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer started off well but had to walk back scoring 26(15), which included five fours coming off his bat. It was Sam Billings and Andre Russell who held the game strong for KKR. A four and a six by Billings along with eight huge sixes and a couple of fours from Russell helped KKR finish the game early, with 33 balls to spare.

Umesh Yadav, with his four-for, became the Purple Cap holder with a total of eight wickets in the league so far. Billings played a very composed inning of 24*(23) and Andre Russell, like the finisher he has always been, remained unbeaten and finished his innings scoring 70*(31), getting the Orange Cap.
