Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma has been fined INR 24 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during his side’s clash against Punjab Kings on Wednesday (April 13). Notably, this was Rohit’s second offence in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and if he’s found guilty one more time, the dashing opener would be banned for one game alongside paying a penalty of INR 30 lakh.

Alongside skipper Rohit, the other members of the MI playing XI were also fined INR 6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fee (whichever is lower). The same was confirmed in a release issued by the official site of the IPL. Notably, Rohit became the first captain to commit multiple offences of maintaining a slow over-rate this season. Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant and Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Kane Williamson have been found guilty once.

“The Mumbai Indians have been fined after they maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 match against Punjab Kings at the MCA Stadium, Pune on April 13,” read the release issued by the IPL.

“This was the team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences. Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was fined Rs 24 lakhs and the rest of the members in the playing eleven were fined Rs 6 lakhs or 25 percent of their match fee, whichever is lower,” added the release.

For the unversed, Rohit was earlier fined INR 12 lakh for the same offence in MI’s first match of the season against Delhi Capitals (DC) on March 27. Hence, the MI skipper has a serious need to keep a check on the clock in the upcoming games.

Meanwhile, MI have endured a horrendous campaign so far, losing their first five games of the season. They did pretty well against PBKS, but eventually lost the contest by 12 runs. The five-time champions must buckle up as a couple of more defeats can see their ouster from the playoff race.
