'He is very approachable as a skipper'- Zaheer Khan lauds 'phenomenal' Rohit Sharma's captaincy skills

Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians’ director of cricket Zaheer Khan has lauded his franchise skipper Rohit Sharma’s captaincy skills. The former veteran pacer emphasized on the fact that Rohit is one of the main reasons for the team’s success over the years, and the team has achieved heights due to his contribution with both bat and as a captain as well.

Zaheer opined that Rohit is very approachable as a skipper and gives his time and support to each and every player in the squad. The former Indian pacer also said that under Rohit’s guidance, Mumbai Indians can also nurture several other players for the leadership role.

The franchise had an underwhelming tournament last year as per their standards as they finished fifth on the points table after the league stages. The Mumbai-based team will now be keen to stage a turnaround in the upcoming edition.

“Rohit is a player’s captain. He’s been phenomenal for Mumbai Indians over the years as a player and a leader. The fact that he dedicates personal time to each individual and is very approachable, makes him a role model and a standout leader,” Zaheer told Sportstar.

“We have always been a team which promotes and gives freedom to youngsters. With Rohit’s experience and attitude, I believe we will have a lot of individuals who would be groomed as leaders in their own respective ways, ” he added.

Talking about Rohit’s career in the IPL, the 34-year-old has played a total of 213 matches in which he has amassed 5611 runs at an average of 31.17. The right-handed batter has stroked 40 fifties and one century as well. The opening batter plays with a strike rate of 130.40.

Meanwhile, MI will start their 2022 IPL campaign against strong-looking Delhi Capitals side on March 27 (Sunday) at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, in what is expected to be cracker of a contest between the finalists of IPL 2020 edition.
