Mumbai Indians lost their opening game for the 10th consecutive time in the Indian Premier League (IPL). On Sunday (March 27), they lost to Delhi Capitals by four wickets. Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel played blinders to stun the five-time champions after it seemed as if MI would win the game easily. A tough day at the office for Rohit Sharma and his troops didn’t get any better as they were fined for slow over-rate in the game.

The skipper has been fined INR 12 lakh as this is the first offence of the side. Mumbai Indians will have to be careful going forward in the tournament as there will be even harsher fines if the offence is repeated.

“The Mumbai Indians have been fined after they maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 match against Delhi Capitals at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on March 27. As it was the team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” an official statement from IPL read.

The BCCI has been strict since the last season in terms of over-rates. According to the rules, the minimum over-rate to be achieved in IPL matches to complete an innings of 20 overs on time is 14.11 overs per hour.

DC stun MI in a sensational turnaround

As far as the match is concerned, Mumbai Indians posted 177 runs for the loss of five wickets in their 20 overs. Ishan Kishan slammed an unbeaten 81 off just 48 balls with 11 fours and two sixes. Rohit Sharma also impressed with a 41-run knock, but others didn’t contribute much. In response, the Delhi Capitals looked down and out at one stage at 104/6. This is when Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav joined hands to add an unbeaten 75 runs in just five overs to help the side get over the line.
