Playing XI

Kolkata Knight Riders: Robin Uthappa (WK), Gautam Gambhir (C), Manish Pandey, Suryakumar Yadav, Shakib Al Hasan, Yusuf Pathan, Andre Russell, Piyush Chawla, Morne Morkel, Ankit Rajpoot, Sunil Narine

Rising Pune Supergiants: Ajinkya Rahane, Usman Khawaja, George Bailey, Saurabh Tiwary, MS Dhoni (WK/C), Thisara Perera, Irfan Pathan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Adam Zampa, Murugan Ashwin, Ashok Dinda

Captain’s speak:

Gautam Gambhir: “This is the third toss that I have lost in a row (smiles). Now we have got to put runs on the board and restrict them. Sunil Narine comes in place of Hoggy (Brad Hogg) and Ankit Rajpoot replaces Umesh Yadav.”

MS Dhoni: “We will bat first. Looks like a good pitch to bat on first up, might slow a bit later on. We have made a couple of changes. Toss is something that’s not in our control. We are looking into the bowling department on the whole. I think it’s unfair to judge players on the basis of a couple of games. Bhatia and RP Singh are out – we have seen enough of them (smiles), M Ashwin and Irfan Pathan are in.”

TOSS: Rising Pune Supergiants have won the toss and have opted to bat

It will be all to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders as they face up to the might of the Rising Pune Supergiants. A win will be immensely helpful for the Knight Riders’ prospects of making into the playoff stages. The Supergiants, however, will certainly be playing for pride as they look to salvage something out of a season that has gone absolutely sideways. The horrific season for the Supergiants has seen many questions the leadership quality of the diminishing MS Dhoni. It will be all to play for as far as he is concerned as well, at the very least, in a bid to reclaim his lost throne.

The Knight Riders, on the other hand, have proved once again the importance of continuity in the side with several of their major players retained to form the core of the team. The Eden Gardens wicket will also prove to be a supremely competitive track, ensuring that the toss, pitch conditions, and the dew have a minute or no effect on proceedings. As far as the Knight Riders are concerned, Andre Russell and Yusuf Pathan may well be called upon to deliver the goods should the top order crumble once more.
