Shimron Hetmyer’s brutal assault with the willow left the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) side dumbstruck. The left-hander bludgeoned his way to a murderous 25-ball 53* as the Bangalore outfit was shattered by the marauding knock from Hetmyer’s willow.
However, Mohammed Siraj’s sensational final over allowed the RCB side to post their 5th victory of the tournament. The right-arm pacer held his nerve and conceded two runs lesser than what the Delhi Capitals would have wanted as the RCB side got back to winning ways.
Apart from Hetmyer, Delhi skipper Rishabh Pant also contributed a sedate 58* off 48 deliveries. But in the end, the Delhi Capitals went down to the Bangalore outfit in a humdinger of a contest, losing by one run.
For the Virat Kohli-led outfit, Harshal Patel was the pick of the bowlers. The right-arm pacer scalped 2 wickets in the 4 overs that he bowled, and gave away 37 runs. Apart from Patel, the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Kyle Jamieson also scalped a solitary wicket each.
AB de Villiers’ pyrotechnics propels RCB to 171/5
Once again, it was the legendary AB de Villiers who spearheaded RCB’s charge with the bat. Even though cricket is a sport where collective effort propels the side to success, it would not be an exaggeration to say that it was de Villiers’ solo performance with the willow that propelled RCB to a total of 171/5.
The South African batting icon scored 75* at a whopping strike rate of 178.57. His innings was studded with 3 fours and 5 sixes. Apart from De Villiers, Rajat Patidar and Glenn Maxwell also contributed to the RCB total. While Patidar scored a 22-ball 31, Maxwell helped himself to 25 off 20 deliveries.
The Delhi Capitals’ bowlers indulged in the perfect teamwork. Five bowlers from the Delhi side picked up a single wicket each. But then, the stand-out performer for the Delhi Capitals with the ball was Avesh Khan. The right-arm pacer bowled 4 overs, gave away 24 runs, and also picked up the prized scalp of Virat Kohli.
Ishant Sharma was impressive in his first game for the Delhi Capitals this season and gave away 26 runs in the 4 overs that he bowled. Ishant also picked up the wicket of Devdutt Padikkal.
And with this victory, the Royal Challengers Bangalore side has moved to 1st place in the points table, while the Delhi Capitals side occupies 3rd place.
