The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were tottering at 31/5, and it seemed as if they might not even cross the 100-run mark. But then, a savage assault from Andre Russell would have made the hearts of the CSK fans skip a beat. In a murderous assault that lasted 22 deliveries, the West Indian blasted 54 runs.

If Russell stirred up a storm, Pat Cummins unleashed a tornado and tore the CSK bowling attack to shreds. The Australian blasted 66* off just 34 deliveries to pulverize the CSK bowling attack. Dinesh Karthik played his part too and scored 40 off 24 deliveries. But in the end, the KKR side went down to the CSK outfit by a margin of just 18 runs.

For the ‘Men in Yellow’, Deepak Chahar was the pick of the bowlers. Swinging the ball both ways, Chahar scalped four wickets upfront as the Kolkata batsmen appeared flummoxed. Apart from Chahar, Lungi Ngidi scalped three wickets as well.

The Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) batsmen made merry in the first innings. The CSK openers put on a splendid 115 run partnership off just 12.2 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad proved his worth finally with the willow by smashing a fast 64 off just 42 balls.

And, Faf du Plessis played the role of wrecker-in-chief by smashing a sensational 95* as the Chennai side ended their innings with a mammoth total of 220/3 on the board. Apart from du Plessis and Gaikwad, the likes of Moeen Ali and MS Dhoni also contributed useful cameos with the bat in hand.

And finally, while the Chennai Super Kings are currently placed at the top place in the points table, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) occupy 6th place.

Sunrisers Hyderabad wallop Punjab Kings (PBKS)

Earlier in the day, the smile on the face of Sunrisers Hyderabad CEO Kaviya Maaran told the story of the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Punjab Kings (PBKS). In a totally one-sided encounter, the ‘Orange Army’ thrashed the Punjab side with 9 wickets to spare to post their first win of the 2021 edition of the IPL.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Punjab side never got the momentum that they needed and kept losing wickets at regular periods. In fact, such was the shoddy state of affairs for the Punjab willow wielders, that apart from Mayank Agarwal and Shahrukh Khan, not even a single Punjab batsman could even cross the 20-run mark. Khaleel Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers for the SRH outfit. The left-arm seamer scalped three wickets and gave away only 21 runs in the four overs that he bowled.

In reply, the SRH opening duo of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow put on a match-winning partnership of 73 runs. While Warner scored a run-a-ball 37, Bairstow scored 63* off 56 deliveries. After the dismissal of Warner, Kiwi batsman Kane Williamson joined Bairstow and scored a sedate 16* to allow the ‘Orange Army’ to get back to winning ways.

With this victory, the SRH side has moved to 5th place in the points table, while the KL Rahul-led Punjab outfit is occupying the last place.
