What should the Sunrisers Hyderabad side do to crack the run chase code in the 14th edition of the IPL? Well, that is a question that the Orange Army does not seem to have an answer to right now. For the third time in a row, the David Warner-led side failed to chase down the target set by the opposition.
In fact, Jonny Bairstow provided a blistering start to the Hyderabad outfit at the top of the order. The right-hander demolished the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) bowling attack and scored a murderous 43 at a strike rate of 195.45. At one stage, the Hyderabad side was cruising at 67/0 off just 7.1 overs and looked all set to overhaul the target of 151 set by the Rohit Sharma-led side.
But then, the Mumbai Indians’ bowlers applied pressure, and the Hyderabad side succumbed to it. In fact, apart from Bairstow and David Warner (who scored 36), none of the other willow wielders looked comfortable out in the middle for SRH. Even though Vijay Shankar struck 28 off 25 deliveries, the Hyderabad side fell short of the target by 13 runs.
Kieron Pollard’s late blitzkrieg propels Mumbai Indians (MI) to 150
For the Mumbai Indians, only three batsmen made contributions with the willow. The duo of Rohit Sharma and Quinton De Kock provided an excellent platform for the Mumbai side and put on a 55-run opening partnership off 6.3 overs. The ‘Hitman’ was the first to depart after he hit Vijay Shankar straight to Virat Singh who was positioned at deep mid-wicket.
Even though Suryakumar Yadav started his innings positively, the right-hander was unable to carry on and departed for 10. Quinton De Kock followed Yadav to the pavilion, and the Mumbai scorecard read 98/3 after 13.5 overs.
Ishan Kishan never looked comfortable out in the middle, and scratched his way to a 21-ball 12, and walked back to the dugout to leave the Mumbai side reeling at 114/4 after 16.5 overs. And, that is when Kieron Pollard struck some lusty blows. The West Indian batting behemoth scored a 22-ball 35* to propel the Rohit Sharma-led side to a total of 150/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
The West Indian struck 3 sixes and a four in his 22-ball stay in the middle. For the ‘Orange Army,’ Vijay Shankar was the pick of the bowlers. The right-arm pacer bowled 3 overs, gave away just 19 runs, and also picked up 2 wickets.
And, with this victory, the Mumbai Indians have moved to the top of the table, while SRH stays at the bottom.
