Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan scored blazing fifties to help Delhi Capitals crush Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets and start their campaign in IPL 2021 on a stunning note. Dhawan scored 85 while Shaw scored 72 as Delhi chased down the 189-run total inside 19 overs.
Delhi Capitals were off to a solid start as their openers Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan came out all guns blazing. The last year’s beaten finalists raced away to fifty in just the fifth over. By the time the powerplay ended, the scoreboard was reading 65 for 0 which is Delhi’s highest-ever score against CSK after six overs.
Shaw and Dhawan were matching each other shot for shot. The end of fielding restrictions helped CSK stem the flow of runs for a while but they could not get the much-needed breakthrough. The poor fielding did not help their cause either as Shaw was dropped twice off Moeen Ali. The youngster went on to complete his fifty off just 27 balls in the tenth over.
In the next over, DC crossed the 100-run mark while Dhawan also reached his fifty off 35 deliveries. Dwayne Bravo finally broke the stand in the 14th over when he dismissed Shaw with the scoreboard reading 138. It was followed by a 29-run stand between Dhawan and Rishabh Pant before the latter departed. Marcus Stoinis was the next to depart but it did not hurt DC much as they reached home with 8 balls remaining.
Earlier in the game, CSK finished their innings on a big total of 188 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs. Asked to bat first, CSK were off to a disastrous start as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis departed with just seven runs on the board. Moeen Ali and Suresh Raina then steadied the ship with a 53-run stand before the former departed for 36.
DC right on top
Unlike Moeen, Raina made the most of his start and went on to score a fifty in his first IPL game since 2019. The southpaw top-scored for CSK, scoring 54 off 36 balls with the help of 3 fours and 4 sixes. Ambati Rayudu (23) and Ravindra Jadeja (26*) also played fine cameos while skipper MS Dhoni was out for a duck.
But the knock that helped CSK cross the 180-run mark came from Sam Curran. The England all-rounder slammed 34 off just 15 balls to help CSK put up the big total. For DC, debutant Chris Woakes and Avesh Khan picked up two wickets each. Thanks to the win, DC are now at the top followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore. CSK, on the other hand, are at the bottom after the heavy loss.
