There is still suspense looming around regarding the player retention policy ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season 11. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently held a meeting with the franchisees which was attended by various team owners including Shah Rukh Khan, Akash Ambani and Ness Wadia.

The meeting was held with the idea to initiate a confirmation citing the total salary purse, number of player retentions and right to match cards for the IPL auction. However, the meeting failed to reach any conclusion as all the franchises had varied opinions on the matter.

Number of players for retention and RTM proposed by each team

Since Mumbai Indians have been the most successful franchise over the years, there was no surprise that they opted for five retentions alongside 2 RTMs. Even the Chennai Super Kings franchise was of the opinion to have at least four retentions and one RTM. Considering the fact that both teams want to retain their core, it was expected.

Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad were in agreement with three retentions and 2 RTMs. Surprisingly, the Kolkata Knight Riders who have won the IPL twice proposed having no retentions. However, they did opt for as many as 5 RTMs as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals made it clear that they wanted a fresh auction without any retentions or RTMs. There was nothing mentioned about the Delhi Daredevils. With so many opinions and ideas inflating between the franchisees, it remains to be seen what would eventually be considered.

We will take one final decision based on the suggestions

The next IPL Governing Council meeting is scheduled to take place soon. That’s when the final decision would be made.

“There was, to a large extent, a consensus between the franchises on many issues. All of them want the league to grow bigger. Soon, we will deliberate on the suggestions given today and take a final decision,” an official was quoted as saying by the ESPNCricinfo.
