Iqbal Abdulla bowls a left-arm spinner’s dream ball

A left-arm slow orthodox bowler running into a left-hand batter from over the wicket, the ball angling in turns – through the batsman’s defence and shatters the stumps. It isn’t easy to get such dismissals to achieve and that makes it sort of a dream delivery for a left-arm spinner. Mumbai’s Iqbal Abdulla who is featuring in the Dr.(Capt.) K.Thimmappiah Memorial Tournament in Karnataka for the DY Patil Cricket Academy produced a beauty he can be proud of.

He had a plan in place, the batsman was already under pressure with close in fielders all around the bat. There was a slip, leg slip, a short leg standing a few steps back waiting for the bad pad opportunity. He tossed the ball up beautifully, over the eye-line of the batsman, it floated in the air as the red cherry revolved towards the batter.

The ball was pitched right up in the zone, inviting the batsman to drive, the left-hander sensed that it could be a ploy and tried to let go of the opportunity. He got his front foot forward striving to reach the pitch of the ball. It landed little in front of his bat he put it down attempting a front foot defence. Front leg stretched out, head down, bat solidly came down to meet the ball and nullify it but to his dismay, it made no contact.

Abdulla’s beauty zipped past the gap between the bat and pad, there was nothing that could now stop it from crashing into the stumps. It hit his middle and the bowler’s joy knew no bounds. The 28-year-old turned back with his hand up in celebration as the batsman was still trying to gauge what had just happened.

The DY Patil Cricket Academy boys ran towards the seasoned bowler to celebrate the wicket and the batsman still stood there with his feet outstretched and looking back at his stumps.
