After a pretty one-sided contest in the T20I series, Ireland are eager to get themselves back on level terms with Afghanistan, who clearly are a step ahead in terms of quality. Asghar Afghan and his troops were clinical throughout the T20I series and continued their unbeaten streak against the Irish.
The record is completely different in the ODIs though as both teams have won 10 games each in the 20 times they faced off. Ireland clearly are a more experienced side having played this format for a much longer time at the highest level in comparison to their opponents.
The Afghans are doing a great job as well and their recent Asia Cup performance was a great indication of how much they’ve grown in recent years. Their spinners are thoroughly enjoying Indian conditions and are eager to continue their dominance in the tour.
The weather in Dehradun will remain very cool and a bit sunny, which might favour the Irish a bit. The decks have been quite brilliant for batting and we might see another flat surface for this encounter.
Mohammad Shahzad will be back in the side and will open alongside Hazratullah Zazai. Their main men in the middle order will be Rahmat Shah, Asghar Afghan, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi with the service of Rashid Khan available towards the death. Nabi, Mujeeb and Rashid form a sensational spinning trio with Shapoor Zadran and Dawlat Zadran sharing the new ball.
Probable XI: Mohammad Shahzad (wk), Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmat Shah, Asghar Afghan (c), Hashmatullah Shahidi, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Shapoor Zadran, Aftab Alam/Dawlat Zadran.
Veteran William Porterfield and Paul Stirling will open for the Irish with Balbirnie coming in at number 3. Kevin O Brien, James McCollum, Stuart Poynter and Simi Singh will be coming in the middle order. Ireland will land an experienced fast bowling combination which includes the likes of Tim Murtagh, Boyd Rankin, George Dockrell and Barry McCarthy.
