In 2003/04 the world was introduced to Irfan Pathan. The southpaw was a revelation in his first tour in which he accompanied the Indian cricket team down under. At 19, it can also be assumed that Pathan exuded the immaturity of a teenage player whilst making his debut. Moreover, he became one of the few pacers to make his initial baptism in Australia.

Although Pathan is well into his 30s and not associated anymore with the Indian team, he is still making rounds with Baroda in the labyrinth of the Ranji Trophy. However, in spite of this, Pathan remains to be an important member of the Indian cricketing fraternity and has also stated that he believes in making a comeback into the Indian team.

However, having made his first tour to Australia all those years ago, there was some unfinished business when it came to badgering the Aussies yet again. While all-rounder Damien Martyn and Irfan Pathan remain to be friends to this day, they still had some unfinished business on the latter’s birthday.

A tweet from Pathan’s twitter account read: “I thought  clapping was a normal thing when someone gets a wicket until I did it to @damienmartyn  only to get fined;). Happy birthday mate.” While this clearly shows that there is no love lost between the two, it also highlights the rivalry between all-rounders in the game today.

The incident occurred when Pathan dismissed Martyn when an attempted sweep shot landed in the safe and secure hands of Hemang Badani at Deep square-leg. However, Irfan’s celebration of clapping in the face of Martyn did not go down too well with Martyn as Pathan was subsequently fined for his celebratory actions.
