Irfan Pathan tweets concern about Jamia students amid protests over Citizenship Act

The country is seeing violent protests which started when the Indian government passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in both houses of the parliament. The protests have erupted in the capital Delhi as well with many students from universities around the country protesting about the same. One such incident in Delhi’s Jamia Milia Islamia University has left cricketer Irfan Pathan concerned for the well-being of the students.

The students were protesting against the implementation of the new citizenship law, which turned violent on Sunday evenings as Delhi Police had to resort to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control. The situation got worse on the evening of December 15, thanks to vandalism, burning of vehicles, which forced the police to enter the campus.

Irfan Pathan shows concern for students on Twitter

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Parliament last week and has seen protests in major cities of North East India and across major universities in the country. Students from Aligarh Muslim University, Hyderabad’s Maulana Azad Urdu University and Banaras Hindu University held protest marches in solidarity with Jamia students on Sunday.

Police had to use batons and teargas in order to contain the violence and detained 100 students at Jamia, who were later released around 3.30 pm. India all-rounder Irfan Pathan showed a concern for the students’ well being and tweeted, “Political blame game will go on forever but I and our country is concerned  about the students of #JamiaMilia #JamiaProtest”

After making his Test debut for India in 2003, the Baroda-born pacer scalped 100 wickets in 29 matches including seven five-wicket hauls. The left-handed all-rounder was last seen playing for Jammu and Kashmir in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in February.

Recently, the all-rounder had grabbed headlines for slamming Abdul Razzaq for his comments on Indian skipper Virat Kohli and ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah. “Look at Virat Kohli when he scores he scores. Yeah, he is a good player for them and is performing consistently, but I don’t place him in the same class as Sachin Tendulkar, who was a different class altogether,” Razzaq had said about Kohli.

The Pakistan all-rounder had also termed Jasprit Bumrah as a ‘baby-bowler’. Hence, Pathan had taken it to Twitter to advise fans who were raging because of Razzaq’s comments.

Pathan recalled Miandad’s comments for him as he wrote: “Irfan jese bowlers hamari gali gali mein paae jate hay” par jab jab ye galli bowler inke samne khela har baar inki gilliyan nikal ke rakh di.
