Mahendra Singh Dhoni is one of the greatest cricketers that the game has ever seen. A leader par excellence, Dhoni has led India to numerous accolades during his illustrious cricketing career that lasted a decade and a half.
The 2019 World Cup semifinal match between New Zealand and India turned out to be Dhoni’s last in Indian colours. The right-handed batsman scored a fighting half-century for India, but it still could not help his side cross the finish line.
Chasing a target of 240, India were bowled out for a total of 221 and lost the match by 18 runs. Apart from Dhoni, even Ravindra Jadeja scored a valiant 77 off just 59 deliveries for the Indian side as well.
Kane Williamson’s comment about MS Dhoni after the 2019 World Cup semifinal
After the semifinal clash between New Zealand and India, a reporter asked Kane Williamson whether he would have taken MS Dhoni in his playing XI. And to that, Williamson gave an extremely witty reply.
Williamson asked the reporter whether Dhoni was looking to change nationalities and is eligible to play for New Zealand. Terming Dhoni as a world-class player, Williamson further opined that the experience that Dhoni has and his contribution to the Indian cricket team have been extremely important.
Adding that Dhoni played a crucial role for India alongside Ravindra Jadeja in the 2019 World Cup semifinal, Williamson concluded by stating that Dhoni is definitely a valuable and world-class cricketer.
“Is he looking to change nationalities? Because we will consider that selection if we have to! He’s a world-class player. Had I been the India captain? Yeah, his experience at his level and in these occasions is so important and his contribution today and yesterday, but throughout this campaign, it was extremely, extremely important.
That partnership he was involved in with Jadeja who came in and hit the ball better than anybody in both teams was very, very valuable and he’s a world-class cricketer,” said Williamson in the post-match press conference after the 2019 World Cup semifinal.
