There is no doubt that MS Dhoni is one of the best captains to have ever played the game. But, to understand his genius, we need to look at the aspects which makes him a great leader. One of them has to be selections. Dhoni is very particular about the players that he selects in his team and he has been known for boosting the morals of the young players.

Tamil Nadu team has struggled in recent times in Ranji Trophy. Continous changes in their teams has created a little bit of instability within the side. This has led to some disappointing Ranji seasons. In a recent interaction, former India batsman and the current head coach of Indian women’s cricket team, WV Raman has urged the Tamil Nadu selectors to try and assess the cricketers like MS Dhoni used to do before selecting or dropping the players.

MS Dhoni takes a lot of time before giving the nod: WV Raman

Raman during a chat with Ravichandran Ashwin pointed out how Dhoni backs his players and gives them a longer run before dropping them. He also said that the former Indian captain takes a lot of time before finally deciding whether to play a player or not. He said that it is important for the selectors to take their time to access the positives and negatives of each player, before finally deciding on something.

“Chopping and changing happens only when people get affected easily by criticism. Otherwise, it shouldn’t happen. A selector’s job is to pick the best possible squad. So you must take your time to assess cricketers. You must understand what is the strength of a cricketer and what they can do best to help the team,” Raman said on Ashwin’s YouTube chat show ‘The Formula For Success’

Raman expressed that taking the ideas from Dhoni’s bag of captaincy will be a great way ahead for the Tamil Nadu team. Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since its inception year in 2008 and hasn’t ever put a foot wrong.

“That’s how Dhoni operates. He takes a lot of time before he brings in somebody to the team and drops players. Obviously, if he decides that somebody is good enough to play, it is difficult to get the player concerned out of the team also. But the most critical aspect is he takes a lot of time before giving the nod.” Raman added.
