One of the most prominent franchise-based leagues, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is likely to have a proper women’s tournament from 2023. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has said that the inaugural edition will be a priority for the Indian board and they will do everything to make it happen in the next year.

The women’s IPL has been a hot topic among the cricketing fans and experts, but it has remained in the papers. However, all that talks are now looking to be implemented on the ground as well. Meanwhile, former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has his say on the Women’s IPL.

It is a big boost to the women’s game and I am really: Lalit Modi on Women’s IPL

“I didn’t see much of IPL women’s games this year (Women’s T20 Challenge), but I think one of the biggest things they should do is make it mandatory for an IPL franchise to have a women’s team,” Lalit Modi told NDTV.

“If an IPL franchise owner is able to have a women’s team, you’ll see the bench strength in Indian women’s cricket go up. You’ll see investment in women’s cricket by owners who are already making good money now. Amazing step. It’s a big boost to the women’s game and I am really glad,” Modi added.

The IPL sold its media rights at an astonishing price recently and is currently valued as one of the most prestigious and expensive sports leagues in the world. It must be noted that the earlier edition of the women’s IPL was a T20 challenge that had a total of three teams and played a total of four matches. However, it seems that all of that is going to change the next year.

Meanwhile, the Indian women’s cricket team is slated to play a three-match T20I series, followed by three ODIs against neighbors Sri Lanka. The tour will start on June 23.
