It was always a dream to represent the West Indies: Brandon King

Brandon King, born in Jamaica, in 1994, was a consistent run-getter at an early age. He played for West Indies in 2014 Under-19 World Cup but scored just 59 runs. Brandon King then worked on his technique, improved his game and returned to 2017 CPL. He played some vital knocks for his side in 2017, 2018 edition and in the inaugural season of Canada T20 league for West Indies B team.

Guyana Amazon Warriors picked King for the 2019 CPL season. It was a star-studded batting line-up with the likes of Pooran, Hetmyer, Malik, and Rutherford. But the management decided to open with Brandon King. And he didn’t disappoint ending the season as the highest run-getter.

It all changed with one big knock

It was a new chapter of his life and he took the opportunity with both hands. Brandon King provided solidity to the top order and started the season with a couple of good scores. He scored three half-centuries in ten group matches. But the world noticed him after the unbeaten 132* off 72 balls against Barbados Tridents in the first qualifier.

The season didn’t end well for Guyana. But Brandon ended as the leading run-scorer of the season with 496 runs from 12 matches at an average 55.11 at a strike-rate of 148.94. He was immediately rewarded for the good show in the T20 tournament. The selectors included him in the West Indies team for the series against Afghanistan.

Brandon King was delighted after getting a maiden call-up to West Indies team. “These moments are what you work towards as a player. It was always a dream to represent the West Indies. I’m really excited to get started on the upcoming tour,” King said according to West Indies Cricket’s official website. West Indies and Afghanistan will lock horns in three T20Is, three ODIs and a one-off Test match from November 5.
