April 2 – The date has been etched in the Indian fans’ heart forever. On the same day, India won the World Cup after a long wait of 28 years. MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir played match-winning knocks in the night of the final to help the team chase down a mammoth score and scripted history. The country, on Thursday, is celebrating the ninth anniversary of the historic day and recalling the golden moments of the Indian cricket.

Many laud the then Indian skipper for promoting himself to number five ahead of Yuvraj Singh to face Muttiah Muralitharan, It proved to be a game-changing decision as Dhoni went on to smash an unbeaten 91 and his six to seal the game is what everyone remembers. However, it was Gautam Gambhir too who stabilised the innings after early loss of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag.

He scored 97 runs and missed out on a well-deserved century in the final by a whisker. While everyone’s contribution was crucial in the game and throughout the tournament, it is MS Dhoni’s winning six over long on and Ravi Shastri’s exceptional commentary which is remembered every time. It is not a surprising fact too as it was the World Cup-winning moment and the whole country still rejoices it every time.

World Cup 2011 was won by the entire India, says Gautam Gambhir

However, Gautam Gambhir seemed to be fuming on social media over the same after a leading web portal recalled the iconic moment in India’s cricket history. He slammed at them and went on to say that the World Cup was won by the entire country and also highlighted the efforts of the support staff.

“Just a reminder: #worldcup2011 was won by entire India, entire Indian team & all support staff. High time you hit your obsession for a SIX,” he tweeted quoting the web portal’s tweet. While Gautam Gambhir’s efforts were absolutely brilliant in the match and it was certainly a team effort, only the man himself can explain the reason for such a tweet. Also, a few of the fans slammed him for the same.
