New Zealand commentator Ian Smith has called the 2019 World Cup final at the Lord’s Cricket Ground as one of the greatest matches he has commentated in. In that game between the Black Caps and England, when Martin Guptill was run out at the striker’s end in the last ball of the Super Over, Smith had said that the home team won “by the barest of margins”.

The hosts got over the line on the basis of the scrapped boundary count rule. Smith stated that the game is “right up there” and is amongst the greatest matches ever witnessed on the cricket field. Smith understands the pressure of the situation and what was at stake.

It was great and where it came from, I don’t know: Ian Smith

“Is it my favourite time of commentary, it has to be, right up there because it was perhaps one of the greatest games of cricket we have ever seen or ever likely to see, particularly when you consider the importance of what was at stake and the stage we were playing on,” Smith told on Inside out with Harsha Bhogle.

Smith said that he turned in when seven overs were left in the England innings. However, since the match went into the one-over eliminator, Smith’s commentary stint lasted for nearly 90 mins. The likes of Nasser Hussain were there also along with him.

“It was great and where it came from, I don’t know. I had no idea it was going to turn out that way when I sat down with seven overs to go. I had no idea that the last commentary stint that usually is around 30-35 minutes was going to last closer to 90 minutes.

“And it was, I have always said this about commentary, it is not a competition, it is a combination. When you work alongside people, you bring out the best in each other,” he added.

Even during the semi-final when Guptill threw the stumps down to run MS Dhoni out, Smith erupted in joy. At that point in time, Sourav Ganguly was commentating alongside him at the Old Trafford in Manchester.
