Fast bowler James Pattinson will not be featuring in the remainder of the Australia’s domestic season because of a shin injury. The right-hand fast bowler suffered a recurrence of the injury during the second Test against New Zealand and has been ordered to rest for the remainder of the season.

The right-arm quick returned in the three-Test series against West Indies last year and played the second Test in New Zealand, taking 19 wickets in those four Tests. In the second Test against New Zealand at Christchurch, he impressed with his pace and bustling aggression. The 25-year-old took six wickets in the match at Hagley Oval, including 4-77 in New Zealand’s second innings to help Australia with a seven-wicket victory.

Australia team physiotherapist David Beakley said scans after the second Test at Christchurch had shown “some inflammation around the shin consistent with bone stress.”

He said Pattinson “will now require some time off to allow this injury to resolve and will not be available for the remainder of the domestic cricket season.”

“James had a recurrence of his left shin soreness following the second test in Christchurch and had follow-up scans in Melbourne yesterday. These scans have shown some inflammation around the shin consistent with bone stress.

“James will now require some time off to allow this injury to resolve and will not be available for the remainder of the domestic cricket season,” Cricket Australia physiotherapist David Beakley said in a statement on Tuesday.”

Last year, Pattinson had spent a month battling shin soreness before making a comeback.

“I have had sore shins for most of the year,” he said on the eve of the Test.

“With shins, it’s just about managing them. If you do keep playing with them, they can turn into fractures, which is something I didn’t want to happen.”

The shin injury is the latest ailment to worry the fast bowler, who has suffered major back injuries, a rib issue and hamstring strains in recent years. Pattinson has played just 17 Tests since his 2011 debut.
