The Pakistan team, which looked in brilliant form last year, witnessed woeful fortunes after their poor display in the recently concluded New Zealand series. The Men in Green, who were highly regarded as a strong contender following the CT win last year, succumbed to heavy defeats against the Kiwis. The Sarfaraz Ahmed-led side was whitewashed in both the Test and ODI formats against the Black Caps. However, the team from subcontinent succeeded to end on a high after winning the T20I series 2-1.

And in the aftermath of the loss, Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed’s aggressive behavior on the field has drawn a lot of flak, with fans and pundits questioning whether such behavior is acceptable for a leader.

The 30-year-old skipper, however, has his own way of keeping order on the pitch. Sarfraz is known for his emotional outbursts on the field, which has drawn criticism from different corners. The Pakistani skipper can be seen shouting and very animated when things aren’t going exactly as planned on the cricket field. While some purists claim it as an unhealthy habit, there are certain pundits which believe that his attitude symbolizes his intention to win for Pakistan and not just himself.

Speaking on the same lines, Pakistan cricket legend and former captain Javed Miandad blamed the country’s cricket structure for not producing players suited for the ‘role of captain.’ Miandad also referred to the English setup, where selectors while nominating a captain should pay special attention to his conduct, aside form cricketing skills.

Miandad opens up

Speaking to PakPassion, the 60 year-old veteran said, “Sarfaraz is our captain and I have no issues with him as captain but the fact is that we really do not have a system for developing players for the role of captain and this is why we are seeing someone like Sarfaraz behaving in this way with his players,” said Miandad, quoted PakPassion.

He added, “A player who is to be made captain is watched for years for his behavior before he is recommended for the role, but in our country, this is not the case. Before picking a captain for the side, the selectors shouldn’t just look at a player’s batting or bowling or wicket-keeping skills, but they must also pay special attention to his conduct which ultimately has an effect on the morale of the team.”
