Jos Buttler has been am excellent player for England in ODI and T20I cricket, playing at strike-rates of 119.83 and 139.68 respectively. However, when it comes to Test cricket, the Somerset cricketer hasn’t quite been able to stamp his authority just yet. He has been playing in the format since July 27 and though he has shown sparks of brilliance, he hasn’t made full use of his potential.
In 43 Test matches thus far, Buttler has scored 2,211 runs at a mere average of 31.14 with a century against India in 2018 to show for his efforts. Albeit he has 15 half-centuries as well, they have been few and far between. In the last seven Test matches, he hasn’t scored a fifty. His last half-century was against Australia in the 2019 Ashes at the Kennington Oval in London.
Jos Buttler finding it tough
Even in the ongoing three-match series against the West Indies, Buttler has promised, but hasn’t converted the starts. In the Southampton Test, which England lost by four wickets, he churned out scores of 35 and nine. The story was pretty similar even in the second Test at the Old Trafford in Manchester. In the first innings, he was looking good after scoring 40 off 79.
But Caribbean skipper Jason Holder accounted for his wicket when the batsman tried to deposit the ball into the stands over the leg side. In the second innings, Buttler had a stay in the middle alike a nightmare. At the fag end of the fourth day’s play, he was sent to open the batting along with Ben Stokes. Buttler isn’t someone to die wondering and he started batting attackingly.
In the first over itself, he went for an ambitious drive through the covers. Kemar Roach bowled a full-length delivery outside the off-stump and Buttler tried to get off the mark with a thrashing cover drive. However, he could only get an inside edge and the ball crashed on to the stumps.
He got out for a three-ball duck and the hosts lost their first wicket with one run on the board. In the meantime, Buttler has become a butt of jokes on social media. A picture where he’s sitting with a ‘hopeless’ expression, was doing the rounds.
