JP Duminy scored a record-breaking 37 runs (6-6-6-6-2-5nb-6) in a single over for Cape Cobras in the ongoing domestic One-Day Cup in South Africa. The left-hander was in the belligerent mood on the day and smashed Eddie Leie of Knights out of the park five times. The first four deliveries went out of the ground as the skipper Cobras was eyeing for six sixes in an over. But the next ball was a better one from the bowler as he could only take a couple. However, Duminy earned a boundary of the last ball which was illegal and went on to score yet another six off the extra delivery.

Duminy is now the holder of the national record of scoring most runs in an over. Though Herschelle Gibbs remains the only batsman from South Africa to hit 6 sixes in a single over, the feat which he achieved in 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup against Netherlands.

Eventually, Cobras also won the game in the same over as they chased down the target of 245 runs with 13 overs to spare. Duminy, while speaking after the match, admitted that he was going for the record after connecting the first two balls.

I was striking the ball cleanly

“It is not every day you get the opportunity, so of course I was trying to go for the six sixes in an over. (I) initially though it was all about the bonus point. I looked up at the scoreboard and we needed 35 with four overs still to go to get the bonus point, so I just decided to take Eddie on,” he was quoted as saying by IOL, a local South African website. Duminy himself finished with 70* off just 37 balls with 2 fours and seven maximums.

He also said that he was hitting the ball well and after sending the first couple of deliveries out of the ground, he decided to go for full monty. “I was striking the ball really cleanly, and when the first two went for six, I figured I might as well give it a full go now because regardless whether I get out we would still have secured the bonus point. It was enjoyable,” he added while also lauding his team’s efforts in the tournament so far.
