The four men convicted of gang-raping a young paramedical student in a moving bus on the night of December 16, 2012, have been given death penalty and a Delhi court confirmed on Tuesday that they will be hanged at 7 am on January 22.
Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora issued the death penalty of Pawan Gupta, Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur and Vinay Sharma. Two other men were involved in the crime. While one of them died during the trial, the other was a minor at the time of the crime and was sent to a reform facility.
The aftereffects of the gang-rape were tremendous and new law had to be brought in to pacify the relentless protests. The woman, who was accorded the name ‘Nirbhaya’, died in a Singapore hospital around two weeks after the incident. Her parents became faces of the movement against crime against women in the country.
‘Rest in eternal peace now you braveheart’: Yuvraj Singh
Like several others in the country, former India batsman Yuvraj Singh welcomed the death warranty of the four men and expressed his mind on Twitter. In a tweet posted on Wednesday, the 38-year-old said: “Justice is the sum of all Moral duties,” Kudos to the Delhi court for its judgment on the Nirbhaya case. Rest in eternal peace now you braveheart.” Nirbhaya’s family, too, was relieved with the decision that came after just over seven years. Other celebrities also welcomed the decision.

Yuvraj, who bid adieu to international cricket last June and continues to play in franchise cricket, was the man of the series of the 2011 World Cup. The batting all-rounder played for India for 17 years and also overcame the challenge of cancer in between.
In another tweet, the dashing southpaw congratulated New Zealand batsman Leo Carter who recently belted six sixes in an over in his country’s domestic T20 tournament Super Smash. Yuvraj welcomed the 25-year-old left-hand batsman in the ‘six sixes club’ by posting a picture from the animated series ‘Tom & Jerry’. Carter played his stormy innings for Canterbury against Northern Knights.
“Welcome Leo Carter to the six sixes club! That was some epic hitting, now please sign your jersey and give it to Devcich as a mark of respect,” Yuvraj tweeted, mentioning the name of the bowler Anton Devcich who was taken on by Carter. Yuvraj himself had hit six sixes off the bowling of Stuart Broad in India’s match against England in the Twenty 20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007.
