Kandy Falcons and Colombo Stars lock horns after the resumption of the third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in Match no.16 on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Both sides met in Match no. two on the opening day of the ongoing season in Hambantota where the Falcons thrashed the Stars by a massive margin of 109 runs courtesy of a spectacular unbeaten century from Andre Fletcher.
Kandy have had a stunning start to the campaign as they have played six matches and registered victories in five of them. With just one loss and ten points under their belt, they are the table toppers with a healthy net run rate of +1.908. They won their opening three encounters against Colombo, Galle, and Jaffna before suffering their only loss of the season to Galle. The team came back to winning ways with two straight wins against Dambulla and Aura.
On the other hand, Colombo have had a mixed start to the LPL 2022. They have played six games so far and won three and lost three. With six points, the Star finds itself in the third position in the table with an NRR of -0.502. They lost three of their first four matches against Kandy, Galle, and Jaffna with a win coming against Dambulla. However, they picked up some pace in their two outings with victories against Galle and Dambulla.
Speaking about the Head-to-Head fixtures, both have met in five encounters with Colombo dominating the contests. The Stars have won four matches while the Falcons have tasted success only on one occasion which came in the ongoing edition. Table toppers of this season Kandy have endured tough times in the past as they finished fifth in both seasons in 2020 and 2021 while Colombo ended up as semi-finalists two years back and at fourth place in last year’s campaign.

As mentioned above, both teams met earlier on the opening day of the current season and it was Kandy who thumped Colombo by a huge 109-run margin. The Stars batted first and Pathum Nissanka smashed 71 while his opening partner Andre Fletcher went berserk to hit an unbeaten 102 off just 67 which included 11 fours and three maximums. In reply, spinner Wanindu Hasaranga tormented Colombo’s batting line-up as he picked up a hat-trick and ended his spell with figures of 4/14 in just three overs to win the game for his side.
