It has been a golden year for New Zealand’s Kane Williamson. Williamson, one of the best batsmen in world cricket, scored his fifth century of this calendar year in an emphatic win over Sri Lanka in Hamilton. With that, he has captured the top spot in ICC Test rankings. He created history as he becomes the first Kiwi to reach the top spot.

New Zealand equaled their longest undefeated home streak by registering their 13th win. They came back from behind after trailing in the first innings with the help of Doug Bracewell & Co. Later, with a target of 189 runs to win the Test and the series 2-0, young Chameera bothered them again, but Kane Williamson defined solidity and scored a match-winning century to pin down Sri Lanka single-handedly.

Before the Test, he was third ranked behind England’s Joe Root and South African AB de Villiers but passed both with his unbeaten century in the second innings.

The stylish right-hander began the year with a majestic double century against Sri Lanka. In all, he compiled a New Zealand record 1,172 runs in a calendar year with the boundary which brought his century against Sri Lanka and took him past the previous record of 1,164 set by McCullum last year. With this match winning century, he equaled Ross Taylor of 13 hundreds and is the second leading century maker for New Zealand. He is currently just four tons behind the national record held by Martin Crowe (17). He also ended the year with an astounding Test average 90.15.

In all, the 25-year-old has scored 2,633 runs so far this year, putting him fifth on the all-time list headed by Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara (2,868 last year) and with three one-dayers still to be played in 2015.
