Kevin Pietersen back’s Michael Vaughan who is the front runner in taking over as England’s director of cricket: Former England Captain Michael Vaughan is the front runner in taking over the position of England’s director of cricket. The other two candidates in race are former skipper’s Andrew Straus and Nasser Hussain.
Chances of Vaughan becoming the next director of cricket have grown since Paul Downton who was holding office until recent was sacked from the post by the new ECB chief Tom Harrison. Downton was appointed the director of the team in February, 2015; he is the one responsible for sacking off Kevin Pietersen from English cricket.
But since Harrison has come into the ECB has shown signs’ of turning things around, another big call which is on the cards is survival or curtailment of the national selector James Whitaker. It will be made clear when the chief presents the report of assessment and analysis of the reasons behind England’s dismal show and early exit from the World Cup 2015 to the board.
The axe could have also fallen on England’s cricket coach Peter Moores, who failed miserably to get things under control once the team started rolling down the loosing ways. But there are strong chances of him surviving for the time being at least as Moores is learned to have considerable backing from the players.
Michael Vaughan was asked for his response to the reports and he was quoted by the Telegraph saying, “For the first time since retiring six years ago I am open to a conversation with the ECB. I always want England to move forward and be successful. I have a vision for the game and I think I will be one of many ex-players who will be more than willing to talk to the ECB to see what exactly the role is and how much influence it will wield over the future structure of our game.”
Kevin Pietersen who has done almost everything in his prowess now to make himself available and eligible for reconsideration seemed happy with the news and said that Vaughan is the right man to take over the proceedings of English cricket.
Pietersen told the BreatheSport website, “[Vaughan] will know what changes need to be made for the good of English cricket, “the way he captained shows he’ll change the brand of cricket currently being played, which we need.”
England’s head coach Peter Moores and Director of cricket at Surrey Alec Stewart also seemed to back this decision.
